Medved, The Czech Republic & Me

Medved, The Czech Republic & Me

By Moshe Phillips

I began to listen to The Michael Medved Show soon after it debuted in Philadelphia in the late 1990s.

In 1993,  when I was visiting the Left Coast, I had met Medved briefly after Shabbat (Sabbath) services at the Pacific Jewish Center, an Orthodox synagogue in Venice, California. He was president and founder of the congregation.

One of the things that stuck me about his radio show when I first started listening was how Michael raved about Hillsdale College and its Imprimis newsletter / speech digest.

I began to subscribe (it is free) and I read it each month. I look forward to it. I have blogged about it and written about things I have read in Imprimis before. See for example http://www.jewishindy.com/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=10251

But I still felt took Imprimis for granted until I read the July / August issue with a speech from Vaclav Klaus, the President of the Czech Republic. Klaus's insight into the failure of the European Union and the challenges Europe faces because of the Union's excesses and failures represents the most cogent analysis I have read about the current challenges in Europe. See a pdf of the issue here:

http://www.hillsdale.edu/images/userImages/mvanderwei/Page_6907/Imprimis_July-Aug11.pdf

But when Klaus mentioned "my regular and careful reading of Imprimis. I have always considered the texts published there very stimulating and persuasive" something in that resonated.

I simply could not agree more...

If you do not subscribe to Imprimis you should:

Geno's Cheesesteaks Are Not Kosher - But Joey Vento's Heart Was

Geno's Cheesesteaks Are Not Kosher - But Joey Vento's Heart Was

Philadelphia's Joey Vento died of a heart attack at the age of 71 on August 23rd. The Steak sandwiches that Joey Vento made at Geno's sure were not kosher, but there is no denying that Joey Vento's heart was kosher.

Joey Vento was a proud American patriot, an active philanthropist and the owner of a quintessentially only-in-Philly success story.

Teri Adams, the President of The Independence Hall Tea Party Association released a statement describing Joey as a "great friend of the conservative cause and the Tea Party movement...Joey Vento was, and will always be, an inspiration to the cause of freedom and liberty."

Adams is right.

Rest In Peace, Joey Vento.

Glenn Beck: “Israel is the keystone to the West and to freedom"

Glenn Beck was interviewed while in Israel. It's well worth a look:

Glenn Beck's Restore Courage Rally to be Simulcast in Philadelphia

Glenn Beck's Restore Courage Rally to be Simulcast in Live Philadelphia

Philly’s I-ARI one of many holding events for Beck’s 8/24 “Restoring Courage"
  • By Adam Taxin, Philadelphia Jewish Culture Examiner

Posted Friday, August 19, 10:15 AM

A few days from now, thousands of viewing parties are occurring, all over the planet, for Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Courage” event in Jerusalem, taking place on Wednesday, August 24 from 10 AM-noon EST. The Philadelphia area is no exception.

With the expectation of garnering numbers even beyond those of Beck’s “Restoring Hope” event nearly a year ago at Washington D.C.’s National Mall, “Restoring Courage” will be viewed by large groups through the world in halls, rooms, restaurants and homes.

In Philadelphia, the Israel-America Renaissance Institute (I-ARI) think tank is presenting a viewing for like-minded supporters of Israel. Dr. Arno Weinstein, Executive Director of  I-ARI, explained the great level of anticipation of the “Restoring Courage” event as due to the innate desire of Americans to support the shared values of the founding of America and the Hebraic traditions that mandated the creation of the Jewish State of Israel.

Dr. Weinstein elaborated: “The Israel-America Renaissance Institute (I-ARI) is pleased to host the Philadelphia viewing of Glenn Beck’s ‘Restoring Courage.’ We are unyielding advocates of American Exceptionalism, of the foundational doctrines of America’s founding. I-ARI supports the efforts of Mr. Beck and understands that the salvation of this country, the United States, rests in its rediscovering of its own first principles and, this being absolutely pivotal, the recognition of Israel’s particular role in relation to America as the universal.”

Dr. Weinstein continued: “As Israel goes, so goes America. Glenn Beck has been so articulate on these very points. Mr. Beck has been able to bring remarkably difficult concepts to the street, to people who might never have been exposed to such ideas. He has successfully taught accurate history, classically-understood philosophy and moral theology, all while imparting the virtue of study and the revered value of each.”

When asked how Beck’s “Restoring Courage” has managed to create excitement for an event halfway around the world -- and in Israel of all places -- Weinstein answered: “The fact is, Beck has tapped into that moral center, he has understood the heart and soul of the thoughtful American and, most importantly, Mr. Beck knows that by studying, teaching and promoting the historical connection between Israel and America he can bring clarity to the shared moral foundations of both nations.”

Oops - on D-Day - The Metro Newspaper Does it Again! - Forgets Another Patriotic Date

As I have noted before the Metro newspapers in Boston,  New York and Philadelphia have a long track record of Euro-centric thinking, anti-Israel bias and ignoring the of anniversaries of important dates in U.S. history.

On Monday, June 6 Metro failed to mention it was the anniversary of D-Day.

A letter writer caught them and the editors (to their credit) published the letter:

"I would like to thank Metro for the well-written article that appeared in your paper today regarding the anniversary of D-Day... oh, wait, there wasn't an article. But I did learn all about Prince Williams' hat selection though. No wonder Sarah Palin keeps making historical errors: She's obviously reading the Metro!" GORDON HALLETT

What does President Obama Mean by a "Contiguous" State for the Palestinian Arabs?

Contiguous State Deception!

By Steven Shamrak

In a recent major speech at the State Department, President Obama,
addressing the ‘democratic’ revolution in the Middle East and North
Africa and predictably Israel became the main point of attention
again. Obama, like many of his predecessors (Carter, both presidents
Bush, Clinton) has made another attempt to resurrect the peace process
between Israel and so-called Palestinians.

During his recent speech, addressing the Middle-East North African
issues, President Obama stated: “The borders of Israel and Palestine
should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps”

Even before the speech, Obama knew that it is not an acceptable
proposition to both sides, Israel and PA. Israel had much suffered
from Arab aggression, before it was able to free some of Jewish land
from Arab occupation in 1967. Return to 1967 borders would end the
hope of the Jewish people to reunify Eretz-Israel and will put Israel
in existential danger again. The PA has just been pretending that it
is considering the idea of peace as a tactical deception to advance
Israel’s destruction, as it was clearly outlined in the “Stage plan”!
A few days later Obama reverted to the guarantee President Bush gave
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2004, but humiliation and political
damage to Israel had already been done. “Shoot first, clarify later”
is a commonly used tactic of political assault on Israel!

''There was nothing particularly original in my proposal,'' Obama
admitted later during his presentation to the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The idea of land swaps were proposed
several times before, including by President George W. Bush but more
diplomatically, and was vigorously rejected by PA. Knowing that, Obama
had still felt compelled to publicly humiliate Israel again by this
unacceptable idea of swapping Jewish land for Jewish land in order to
accommodate the creation of another Arab-terror state.

During the years of fruitless negotiations the same idea was put on
the table even by Israel several times. It was instantly squashed and
rejected by PA leadership. The only reason why Obama has mentioned the
“land swap” is to pretend that there is a ground for negotiation to
make progress in the fake peace process. Fostering illusion of the
peace process is the way to continue the conflict. This is the true
aim of the multifaceted game! This is consistent with the history of
US involvement in Arab-Israel conflict and all players have been
playing this game quite well.

In his speech Obama said “The Palestinian people must have the right
to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and
contiguous state.”

What map had Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, not a friend of
Israel, shown to him? Where did he see “contiguous” land - connection
between Gaza and Judea/Samaria (West Bank)? Is he planning to cut
Israel a half? Is it OK for Israel to be non-contiguous?

Fatah, Hamas and their masters will never recognize Israel, forget
about as the “Jewish state”. They made it clear many times before. PA
has been even ignoring major Oslo accords’ requirements for peace -
recognition of Israel, stopping terror attacks and anti-Israel
incitement.

A few years ago 8,500 Jews were forcefully removed from Gaza. There
are almost 500,000 Jews living in Judea and Samaria. The PA is
planning to create another Islam dominate state without Jews! Why is
transfer of Jews from their ancestral land, in order to accommodate
bogus claims of the terror supporting population, is satisfactory to
the international community and it is not considered as a violation of
the 4th Geneva convention, but transfer of the fake Palestinians to
Sinai, a vast contagious land with very low population and various
resources is not an acceptable one?

Why does the state of this fake nation which was forged in order to
destroy Israel must be created on Jewish land? The international
anti-Semites have already displaced and committed numerous genocides
and crimes against Jews in Britain, Spain - all over Europe. Now they
are assisting Arabs to finish their dirty job in the Jewish homeland!

Obama has also suggested put aside for the future negotiations the
future of Jerusalem and the fate of Palestinian refugees. Recognition
of Israel was ‘put aside’, end of terror attacks again on Israel was
‘put aside’, establishing a democratic governance in PA is not a
priority! Have this ‘genius’ negotiating tactic brought peace to
Israel?

Why don’t we talk about fake Palestinian refugees now? During the war
of Independence, which Arabs had instigated, some 460,000 people,
currently known as Palestinians, left the conflict zone following
orders from their leaders. Their numbers had doubled immediately after
the UN announced the aid available to them, creating several
generations of professional refugees. Since then, close to 850,000
Jews were forced to leave Muslims countries. Hypocrisy must be
exposed! Facts are available if someone wants to find and learn them.
Jew-haters and self-hating Jews do not want to know or just disregard
them!

The Arab-Israel peace process is a deception! It is designed to
prevent Israel from reclaiming Jewish land and establishing the
sovereign Jewish state, Eretz-Israel. Western countries have been
using instability in the Middle East in order to control oil supply
from Islamic countries. At the same time major Islamic ideological
powers and organizations (Iran, Wahabi Saudi Arabia and Muslim
brotherhood) are using the Arab-Israel conflict to divert attention
from themselves and their true Islamic agenda - global world
domination of Islam. That is why they created the fake Palestinian
nation in 1964. Termination of Israel is just the first step in the
Holly war against “infidels”!

This is a peculiar symbiotic relationship between two enemies united
by their hate for Jews and lust for power. Traditional anti-Semitism
of the Western democracies and Russia (former Soviet Union – communist
super power in the past) became the best ally of their mortal Islamic
enemies!

The reunification of Gaza and the West Bank

What Does "the Reunification of Gaza and the West Bank" Really Mean?

By Cheryl Lewin, Chair AFSI Chicago

As a concerned US citizen and in my capacity as the Chicago co-chair of AFSI/Americans for a Safe Israel (http://www.afsi.org/)

Please read this statement from Robert Serry,  the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace (he is from the Netherlands). He is applauding and in favor of what will be the destruction the State of Israel - the entire State of Israel (and there is no differentiating between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem).

Supporting Hamas and Fatah and an alliance between the two is dangerous to all of us.

Below I have included a link where you can contact your congressional representatives and senators.

Our tax dollars must stop supporting the UN and their funding of terrorist regimes.

Our tax dollars must stop funding people who claim to represent "the downtrodden and the oppressed". These "oppressed" are only oppressed by their own "leaders" and they are intent on murder of not only Jews but also all other non-Muslims and the destruction of what has been known as "Western Civilization."

The United States must veto any UN proposals which will lead to the destruction of Israel - the only true democracy in the Middle East.

--------------------
Statement by Robert Serry, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace
Process, on Palestinian Unity Talks
Jerusalem, 28 April 2011
http://unispal.un.org/unispal.nsf/47d4e277b48d9d3685256ddc00612265/47e1f68640972bcc85257880004aba82?OpenDocument

The United Nations strongly supports all efforts for progress towards reunification of Gaza and the West Bank within the framework of the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization, on which progress is overdue. Reunification is essential for achieving a two-state solution that should be reached through negotiations. In this regard, Special Coordinator Serry notes with much interest the agreement recently announced between representatives of the two main Palestinian factions and the important contribution of Egypt in this regard. He hopes that reconciliation will now take place in a manner that promotes the cause of peace and will continue to follow developments closely.

The US - our tax dollars - must stop funding the terror-supporting UN.
The US - our tax dollars - must stop funding the Palestinian Authority (PA).

In plain English, why keep giving support to someone who has said they want to kill us? We have rights to live and not be threatened. And we certainly would expect our government to protect our civil liberties, which are certainly endangered with ongoing financial support of the UN and PA.

This united front of Hamas and Fatah, comprised of terrorists, only adds to the overall unrest and instability in the Middle East and represents first [solid] step in the unilateral declaration of a "Palestine" state.

Any government in which Hamas - a terrorist organization which in its charter calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, meaning it calls for genocide - plays a role, must not receive one more dollar from the United States.

This "unity" announcement clearly signals that President Mahmoud Abbas has chosen Hamas and its terrorism over peace with Israel. (He never really wanted peace... it was all a charade.)

Israel is under attack from an enemy that will stop at nothing until the State of Israel is destroyed. The same enemy that also wants nothing more than to see the United States defeated and diminished. The same enemy who danced in the streets and handed out candies on 9/11 in Gaza.

They have their candies ready again.

The Muslim Brotherhood: Then and Now

The Muslim Brotherhood: Then and Now

By Jerrold L. Sobel

Feb. 25, 2011

He was born the son of a pious Imam and part time watch maker on October 14, 1906 in Cairo Egypt.  During the course of his 46 year life he would go on to have a profound effect on the Muslim world, an influence no less felt today.  For those of you unfamiliar with Hassan al-Banna, the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, don’t feel too bad.  Based upon some gaffs coming out of the White House over the past two weeks, neither are they.

Influenced greatly by the religious teachings of his father, Shaykh Ahmad al-Banna, Hassan became deeply involved in politics at the early age of 12.  An astute student of Islam, he graduated State Teacher’s Training Center in 1923 and was granted admittance into Dar al-Ulum college.  Later that year he came into contact with prominent Islamic scholars which helped shape his political, religious philosophy and would eventually lead to the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood five years hence.

A disciple of both Muhammad Rashid Rida and Muhammad Abduh, al-Banna was likewise vexed by the weakness of Muslim societies in the face of Western colonialism. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashid_Rida) He too believed the only way Islam could reverse its decline vis a vis the West was to return to true religious purity. To accomplish this he urged his followers to forgo all things Western and secular and become more proactive denouncing atheism, Christianity, and Judaism in particular. Increasingly more radical, at the age of 22, al-Banna instituted the Society of the Muslim Brotherhood in March of 1928.

Contrary to the remarks made by Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper on Thursday, Feb 10. The Muslim Brotherhood is not  and never has been “a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hassan ) Nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and a host of other Islamic terror groups are a direct outgrowth of the teachings of Hassan al Banna and the Brotherhood. If Director Clapper did a bit more research before testifying so foolishly on Capitol Hill, he may have read the motto of this grandaddy of all terror organizations: “Allah is our purpose, the Prophet our leader, the Koran our constitution, Jihad our way and dying for Allah’s cause our supreme objective.” What the Director was referring to as he steadfastly refused to label the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, only he alone knows. In fact, there is not, and has never been a scintilla of secularization which can be attributed to the Muslim Brotherhood.

In his writings, al-Banna made it abundantly clear that freeing Egypt of Western secularism was not his final goal. He states unequivocally that his plan is to invade the Western heartland and, “struggle to overcome it until all the world shouts by the name of the Prophet and the teachings of Islam spread throughout the world....and all religion will be exclusively for Allah.”

Most people are not aware of al-Banna but are quite familiar with the terrorist groups and methods of those that adhere to his teachings. Quotes such as the following were and are an inspiration to Muslim terrorists throughout the Islamic world. The umma; the community, “that knows how to die a noble and honorable death is granted an exalted life in this world and the eternal felicity in the next....”Therefore prepare for jihad and be the lovers of death.”  (http://www.mideastweb.org/Middle-East-Encyclopedia/hassan_al-banna.htm)  Over the past decades of homicide bombings, many Westerners have become so inured to these atrocities that few take the time to ponder where the inspiration for these dastardly acts came from. They do not have to look past the teachings of al-Banna.

Feeding off of his hateful rhetoric, al-Banna enlisted many followers during the 1930’s in the hope of once again reviving the Caliphate that came crashing down following the defeat of the Ottomans at the conclusion of World War I. His two most prominent, or should I say infamous adherents were Nazi allies Haj Amin al-Husseni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem in the 1930’s, and Sayyib Qutb, a prolific writer that echoed al-Banna’s anti-Semitic, anti-Western, abhorrent sentiments to a tee.

During World War II, both he and al-Husseni greatly expanded the Brotherhood by associating it with the Third Reich and its hatred of Jews. From the outset, the Brotherhood began exchanging de facto ambassadors with the Nazis and joined them in covert operations against the Jews and the British. Where al-Husseni visited Hitler and organized SS Nazi divisions of Bosnian Muslims, al Banna provided Muslim translations of “Mein Kampf,” and portrayed the Jew as a devil worshipping enemy of Allah.

Throughout the late 1940’s the Brotherhood kept up incessant violence and agitation throughout Egypt.  In one week alone 128 people were wounded during attacks mainly aimed against the British.  Al-Banna himself eventually met the fate he so wantonly wrought upon others on February 12, 1949, when he was assassinated most likely by agents of the Egyptian monarchy, another object of his angst.

Some may ask, Can’t people and groups change? Possibly James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence is right by refusing to label the Brotherhood a terrorist organization? Maybe today’s Brotherhood is breeding a bunch of good guys?

Let’s have some fun and play the famous T.V. game show, Jeopardy. Here are the answers given by the heads of their leadership followed by the questions.

Muslim Brotherhood party leader Mohamed Ghanem said on Iranian TV that Egypt should stop selling gas to Israel and prepare the Egyptian army for a war with the Jewish State...Name a key ingredient of the Camp David Peace treaty between Israel and Egypt?

In 2008 Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Mahdi Akef in 2008 declared that that violence against civilians of the kind practiced by Osama Bin Laden is justified against “occupiers”(http://www.memritv.org/report/en/)2795.htm#_ednref3 .....If the Brotherhood is democratically elected or otherwise takes power in Egypt, will war between Israel and Egypt become inevitable?

In June 2010 Muslim Brotherhood Guidance Bureau member Essam El Erian announced that the border of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip should be opened.....Will Egypt soon cease preventing weapons from Iran flowing freely into Gaza?

In 2008 Muslim Brotherhood Executive Bureau member Mahmoud Ghozlan insisted that“women and non-Muslims don’t have the right to lead or govern Muslim states,”.....What is one of the main tenets of Sharia law?

In a 2008 interview by Supreme Guide Muhammad Mahdi Akef insisted that Copts could not lead Islamic states such as Egypt.....Would lawmakers in Egypt begin imposing Sharia law on non-Muslim citizens, denying them full legal rights and protections?

Final Jeopardy:

In a 2008 interview Muslim Brotherhood Executive Bureau member Mahmoud Ghozlan emphasized that homosexuality needed to be outlawed.....What will happen to the Gay community if the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power in Egypt?.....Game over.....

So for those of you like the Obama Administration that find the glass half full from this rosy picture of the Muslim Brotherhood, here’s some more good news.  On Friday, to a hero’s welcome, Yussuf al-Qaradawi, one of Islam’s most controversial clerics just returned to Egypt after years of exile in Qatar.  (http://www.infowars.com/egyptians-return-to-street-to-push-army-on-reforms/)  Not back fifteen minutes, he immediately professed to tens of thousands in Tahrir Square that the military should immediately “open Egypt’s border crossing with Gaza.”  No doubt we will be hearing more on this issue in the days and weeks ahead as the most organized of the opposition groups, the Muslim Brotherhood, with strong support from the majority of those freedom loving Egyptians, move to the forefront of Egyptian politics.

Herbert Zweibon Memorial Fund

Helen Freedman, the Executive Director of Americans For A Safe Israel / AFSI, wrote a note on February 17, 2011 that I'd like to share part of here.

Dear AFSI friends,

It is hard to believe that it is almost a month since we lost our dear friend and Chairman, Herb Zweibon (Chaim ben Moshe) zl. His death on Tu B'Shevat, January 19, 2011 has left his family, our organization, and all Herb’s friends and associates in Israel and America, with an emptiness which can never be filled. His great contributions over the forty years during which he steered AFSI through very rough waters are immeasurable, and continue to reverberate to this very day.

In honor of the shloshim or thirty days since his death, I know there are many who would like to remember him through some positive action. For those who are so inclined, the study of Torah in memory of the departed is considered a special privilege.

An additional option is to make a contribution to the Herbert Zweibon Memorial Fund which AFSI has established. We hope that through this fund we can perpetuate the principles of Zeev Jabotinsky and Shmuel Katz which were so dear to Herb.

If you choose to participate in the Memorial Fund, please mail a check to the AFSI office at:

Reality Check: Where is Ed Rendell from?

The front cover of the Monday, January 3, 2011 issue of Metro’s Philadelphia edition showed just how amateurish the newspaper can be:

The headline read: “Swan song starts for Gov. Rendell”

The sub head read: “Philly’s ‘larger than life’ native still has work to do in last two weeks, aide says”

And just like that the history of Rendell’s New York roots, his childhood and his adolescence was re-written. He’s not originally from New York. He’s a Philly native.

In  fact Ed Rendell came to Philadelphia when he started his freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania.

Maybe ‘Philly native’ means something different in Metro’s lexicon. Metro, as I have explained previously, has a history of failing to use such terms as terrorist and militant correctly.

I have written articles about Metro newspapers twice:

In December 2010 about Metro’s failure to cover Pearl Harbor Day, please see:

In June 2008 about Metro’s “bashing of Israel and the dissemination of an Orwellian view of terrorists…” please see:

And for my opinion about what we should remember about Fast Eddie, please see:
