Medved, The Czech Republic & Me

Medved, The Czech Republic & Me

By Moshe Phillips

I began to listen to The Michael Medved Show soon after it debuted in Philadelphia in the late 1990s.

In 1993,  when I was visiting the Left Coast, I had met Medved briefly after Shabbat (Sabbath) services at the Pacific Jewish Center, an Orthodox synagogue in Venice, California. He was president and founder of the congregation.

One of the things that stuck me about his radio show when I first started listening was how Michael raved about Hillsdale College and its Imprimis newsletter / speech digest.

I began to subscribe (it is free) and I read it each month. I look forward to it. I have blogged about it and written about things I have read in Imprimis before. See for example http://www.jewishindy.com/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=10251

But I still felt took Imprimis for granted until I read the July / August issue with a speech from Vaclav Klaus, the President of the Czech Republic. Klaus's insight into the failure of the European Union and the challenges Europe faces because of the Union's excesses and failures represents the most cogent analysis I have read about the current challenges in Europe. See a pdf of the issue here:

But when Klaus mentioned "my regular and careful reading of Imprimis. I have always considered the texts published there very stimulating and persuasive" something in that resonated.

I simply could not agree more...

Geno's Cheesesteaks Are Not Kosher - But Joey Vento's Heart Was

Geno's Cheesesteaks Are Not Kosher - But Joey Vento's Heart Was

Philadelphia's Joey Vento died of a heart attack at the age of 71 on August 23rd. The Steak sandwiches that Joey Vento made at Geno's sure were not kosher, but there is no denying that Joey Vento's heart was kosher.

Joey Vento was a proud American patriot, an active philanthropist and the owner of a quintessentially only-in-Philly success story.

Teri Adams, the President of The Independence Hall Tea Party Association released a statement describing Joey as a "great friend of the conservative cause and the Tea Party movement...Joey Vento was, and will always be, an inspiration to the cause of freedom and liberty."

Adams is right.

Rest In Peace, Joey Vento.

Glenn Beck: “Israel is the keystone to the West and to freedom"

Glenn Beck was interviewed while in Israel. It's well worth a look:

Glenn Beck's Restore Courage Rally to be Simulcast in Philadelphia

Glenn Beck's Restore Courage Rally to be Simulcast in Live Philadelphia

Philly’s I-ARI one of many holding events for Beck’s 8/24 “Restoring Courage"

A few days from now, thousands of viewing parties are occurring, all over the planet, for Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Courage” event in Jerusalem, taking place on Wednesday, August 24 from 10 AM-noon EST. The Philadelphia area is no exception.

With the expectation of garnering numbers even beyond those of Beck’s “Restoring Hope” event nearly a year ago at Washington D.C.’s National Mall, “Restoring Courage” will be viewed by large groups through the world in halls, rooms, restaurants and homes.

In Philadelphia, the Israel-America Renaissance Institute (I-ARI) think tank is presenting a viewing for like-minded supporters of Israel. Dr. Arno Weinstein, Executive Director of  I-ARI, explained the great level of anticipation of the “Restoring Courage” event as due to the innate desire of Americans to support the shared values of the founding of America and the Hebraic traditions that mandated the creation of the Jewish State of Israel.

Dr. Weinstein elaborated: “The Israel-America Renaissance Institute (I-ARI) is pleased to host the Philadelphia viewing of Glenn Beck’s ‘Restoring Courage.’ We are unyielding advocates of American Exceptionalism, of the foundational doctrines of America’s founding. I-ARI supports the efforts of Mr. Beck and understands that the salvation of this country, the United States, rests in its rediscovering of its own first principles and, this being absolutely pivotal, the recognition of Israel’s particular role in relation to America as the universal.”

Dr. Weinstein continued: “As Israel goes, so goes America. Glenn Beck has been so articulate on these very points. Mr. Beck has been able to bring remarkably difficult concepts to the street, to people who might never have been exposed to such ideas. He has successfully taught accurate history, classically-understood philosophy and moral theology, all while imparting the virtue of study and the revered value of each.”

When asked how Beck’s “Restoring Courage” has managed to create excitement for an event halfway around the world -- and in Israel of all places -- Weinstein answered: “The fact is, Beck has tapped into that moral center, he has understood the heart and soul of the thoughtful American and, most importantly, Mr. Beck knows that by studying, teaching and promoting the historical connection between Israel and America he can bring clarity to the shared moral foundations of both nations.”
